January 2011 Earnings Report

Hey Renegades, it`s finally time for my January 2011 earnings report.  As you probably know, I`m traveling in Europe right now, so it`s taken me a while to find a place with a solid internet connection – and to find enough time to write anything!

This month I earned from new sources: I did some sales copywriting on oDesk as well as coaching on Skype, which provided a nice boost to my earnings.  These sources probably won’t exist for the next two months while I travel, but it’s great having the extra financial buffer.

InfoBarrel

It was a great month on IB for me, I`m up to 866 articles (from 515, an increase of 351), very close to my 1000 goal.  I`ve decided that I probably won`t be going to 2500 (the length of my keyword list) because I want to start spending my time doing other things.  I really enjoy IB, but it`s just one piece of the puzzle, and I`m going to start focusing more on other endeavors.  It will be exciting once these articles have had time to mature.  With 351 articles less than a month old, my earnings rate on a per-article basis will appear much much lower than it would if all the articles were 6 months old.

That being said, I earned $393 from IB this month from the three primary income sources: Adsense, Chitika, and Amazon.

Earnings Breakdown

InfoBarrel
Adsense: $351.29
Chitika: $39.33
Amazon: $2.83

IB Total: $393.45

Miscellaneous Earnings:
Market Samurai Referrals: $46.56
InfoBarrel Contest: $100 first prize
Skype Coaching: $142.44 (150 Canadian)
oDesk Copywriting: $30.00

Miscellaneous Total: $319.00

Monthly Total
: $712.45

This is a pretty good number, considering January is one of the tougher months of the year. Advertisers, having spent so much over the holidays tend to back off in the first month, and consumers tend to spend less as well.  This, in combination with the newness of so many of my articles and their unoptimized state, leads me to believe I should have little problem cracking $1000 per month.

February and March will probably see a regression in terms of earnings because of my travels.  This does not concern me one bit, as it will be appropriate for how I spend my time.  I hope to be around the $400 mark due to IB, since all the miscellaneous earnings will be gone.

Congrats, AJ!

Your ability to travel and still make money is the beauty of passive income. You have a lot of time on your side-enjoy your trip to Europe!

Keep up the great work!

Thanks Mommy^3. I knew how great passive income could be in theory, but didn’t have any idea that I’d have such great results in practice so soon. Thanks for all your support!

Wow! You have more articles on IB than I have from 3 years of blogging on my site. Good job!

haha thanks Asithi. I definitely put more effort into a blog post than an IB article , as I hold my blog articles to a much, much higher standard and I guess you do too. It’s great seeing you here, thanks for your support.

Nice job AJ. It’s cool seeing you’ve got a little diversity going. Also, when are you going to start uploading some videos of your trip? Excited to see where you are at.

Hey Mike! Hopefully soon – things have been crazy and I haven’t had reliable internet (or places to stay) so my priorities have been elsewhere. I’m learning a ton though, and things have finally settled down, so I plan to start creating regular updates. No excuses though, it’s something I’ve got to get on top of. Cheers!

Hi AJ,
Now that I’ve browsed around your blog a bit I REALLY wish we’d had a chance to meet when I lived in Winnipeg! I’m really in awe of what you’ve done in such a short period of time. I’ll be reading more and hopefully, learning some good stuff.

You know, I’ve be working as a freelance writer for 8 years, work full time from home now, and I totally avoided all the residual earnings stuff. Now I wish I had started back then. Even just a little bit and can you imagine where I would be now? Arg! Oh well. My goal is to have a nice tidy sum coming in within ten years so that I, too, will be able to travel!

Hi Danielle,

Wow, very cool to have a (former) Winnipegger here. Where are you living now?

The great thing is that it’s never to late to get started with the residual income! I’m sure with 8 years of freelancing experience you’ll be able to make it happen. All the best (and let me know if I can do anything!)

How has your Infobarrel earnings been holding up? Have they gone down? It seems like they’ve gone down for most people over at IB.

They’ve gone down a small amount but not significantly, likely due to 3 factors:
1) I haven’t done *any* work since Feb (when I left for Europe)
2) 70% rev share instead of 85%
3) Google’s update

I don’t seem to have been hit quite as hard as everyone else by the Panda update. Not sure why.
